New York and London Fashion Weeks; My Picks

So the New York and London Fashion weeks have been and gone and I have picked out a few of my favorite designers and trends that have appeared over these weeks.

First of all at the New York shows we have Anna Sui who had a great collection paying homage to 60's and early 70s. A collection of fur, patchwork, crochet, plaids, shift dresses and dresses with dropped waists. There is an essence of leopard print and the colours are that of the gold, orange, brown and then a contrast of a romantic cream bringing us into more of the 70s era.

Marc by Marc Jacobs brought us a more prim 70s feel with chunky knits, wide trousers and effortless dresses. The colours again are gold, orange, brown and mustard but with an accent of green to lift the collection.

Rodarte pay tribute to the arts and crafts movement with their delightful folk-esque collection. With homespun crochets, patterns that remind one of dolies, fabrics with horsehair to create more interesting textures and folk-like embroideries.

The last collection that caught my eye at NYFW is Thakoon. A collection of plaids in colbart and reds with African tribal prints. Cigarette pants and volumeous peices were in abundance throughout the show. Colbart, red, peach, brown, grey, black and mustard were most apparent in the collection.

Now on to my favorite of all the fashion weeks, London Fashion Week.
London Fashion week never fails to amaze me. I am a great fan of British design, so I have quite a few favorites!

Christopher Kane's collection, he said 'will be known as the liquid collection' took influences from lollipops and pencil cases. Crochet was plentiful with the square patterns reminding me, strangely, of a blanket my grandmother once owned. All the colours are kept to understated elegance in browns, blacks and blues with hightlights of greens and pinks.

Granny chic seemed to be the theme at the Henry Holland show with prints of bingo balls on silk, tweed jackets and skirts and again crochet in a multitude of colours, bringing back a sense of humour to fashion that us Brits seem to love. Granny style pearl necklaces were instead broken down and used as decoration on jumpers. Stripey socks in various lengths and bingo ball printed tights made great accessories to this collection.

Mary Kakrantzou had an amazing collection full of delicous paradisical prints in gorgeous colours. The show consisted of lampshade-esque skirts and floaty fabrics.

Mulberry, a collection that took influence from Fantastic Mr. Fox was any country girls dream. Chunky cord was a staple in the collection along with subtle bird prints. Fishing pants, shooting and duffle jackets are a strong influence in the collection. Golds, mustards, browns, blacks with highlights of purple, pink and green are the colours used mostly in the show.

Gorgeous detailed dresses were the main attraction at the Temperley show. The collection showed influences from the Victorian times, the Twenties and Studio 54 70s glam. Lots of golds and creamy whites are used throughout the collection alongside browns and blacks.

Topshop Unique brought an element of fun to the catwalk with their collection which payed tribute to 101 Dalmatians. With Dalmation prints and a 30s silhouette complete with ganster pinstripes. Faux fur stoles are shown in different colours. Black and white were prominent colours accross the collection along with mustard.

Vivienne Westward's red label was another collection full of fun and humour with an Alice in Wounderland twist. A pure British look in true Westwood style. Gangster style pinstripes and plaids were in the collection along with knee socks and thrown together layers. The show stopper was of course was the multi-coloured feathered jacket. Blues, oranges, browns, golds, red and black were apparent colours in the show.

So excitment so far in the AW11 collections. Key pieces thus far seem to be crochet, plaids, fur and pinstripes. Soft 70s silhouettes alongside a more structured full of volume look. Browns, golds, mustards and orange look to be the key colours with accents of green and blue.

However, we will see how the weeks progress as there still is a lot more to come!
